When Can I Exercise After Nasal Surgery in Gangnam, Seoul?

Answered by Dr. Kim Yoo Suk, MD · Board-certified otolaryngologist · Former professor, Yonsei & Ajou University · Consultations in English

SHORT ANSWER

Light walking is usually fine within a day or two, but strenuous exercise should wait. At Gangnam Yonsei ENT Clinic, patients avoid strenuous exercise for at least one week after turbinate reduction, protect the nose for two weeks after septoplasty, and are cleared individually after sinus surgery or nasal fracture reduction at follow-up.

Start gently and build up

Exercise raises your blood pressure and heart rate, which increases blood flow to the nose. In the first days after surgery, that can trigger bleeding. Contact sports and some gym movements also risk knocking the nose while it is healing. The safest approach is a gradual return guided by your surgeon.

General guide by procedure

  • Turbinate reduction: avoid strenuous exercise, nose blowing and sauna for one week. Crusting lasts about two weeks.
  • Septoplasty: protect the nose for two weeks; avoid contact sports and heavy exertion during this time.
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery: crusting lasts two to three weeks with weekly follow-up; return to exercise is guided by healing.
  • Nasal fracture reduction: the bone is reasonably stable at about two weeks. Contact sports carry a higher risk and need specific clearance.

A typical stepwise return

  1. First days: short, easy walks only.
  2. After the first week (if healing well): longer walks, gentle cycling on a stationary bike.
  3. After follow-up confirms healing: jogging, moderate gym work and swimming.
  4. Last: heavy lifting, high-intensity training, contact and ball sports, and diving.

Stop and rest if you notice bleeding, throbbing or increased pressure.

Specific activities

  • Weightlifting: straining and breath-holding raise pressure in the head; delay heavy lifts.
  • Yoga: avoid inverted poses and deep forward bends early on.
  • Swimming: wait until crusts have settled and your doctor agrees, to avoid infection and pressure.
  • Hot yoga, saunas and jjimjilbang: heat dilates blood vessels; avoid for at least the first week.
  • Golf and hiking: usually earlier than contact sports, but avoid long, strenuous climbs at first.

What we do at Gangnam Yonsei ENT

Many of our patients are active professionals and expats who want to return to running, the gym or weekend hiking quickly. Dr. Kim Yoo Suk, a board-certified ENT and former rhinology professor at Yonsei and Ajou Universities, gives individual advice at each follow-up, based on what he sees endoscopically rather than a fixed calendar alone.

Because surgery is done under local anesthesia, there is no recovery from general anesthesia to account for, but the nose itself still needs time. Instructions are provided in English, and you can ask specific questions about your sport.

Why patience pays off

Returning to intense exercise too early can cause a nosebleed that sends you back to the clinic and sets recovery back by days. In the case of septoplasty or fracture reduction, a knock to the nose before it has stabilized can undo the correction. A short, planned pause usually means a smoother overall recovery and a quicker return to your normal routine in the end. Keeping active with walking during this period also helps your mood and sleep.

Warning signs during exercise

Stop exercising and seek care if you have bleeding that does not settle with rest and gentle pressure, sudden swelling, a feeling that the nose has shifted, or severe headache. If your nose is knocked during sport after nasal fracture reduction or septoplasty, have it checked promptly.

Related questions

Can I go to the gym a week after septoplasty?

Light activity may be reasonable, but heavy lifting and high-intensity training are usually delayed until the nose has had about two weeks to heal and Dr. Kim has checked it. Always confirm at your follow-up first.

When can I swim after sinus surgery?

Swimming is usually delayed until crusts have cleared and the lining has healed, which often takes a few weeks after endoscopic sinus surgery. Dr. Kim will tell you when it is appropriate based on endoscopic findings at follow-up.

Can I go to a jjimjilbang after nasal surgery?

Avoid saunas and jjimjilbang heat rooms for at least the first week, and longer if advised. Heat widens blood vessels in the nose and can increase bleeding. Ask Dr. Kim at follow-up before returning.
