Will Nasal Surgery Stop My Snoring, and What Is Recovery Like in Gangnam, Seoul?

Answered by Dr. Kim Yoo Suk, MD · Board-certified otolaryngologist · Former professor, Yonsei & Ajou University · Consultations in English

SHORT ANSWER

Nasal surgery can reduce snoring when a blocked nose is a major cause, but it does not stop snoring for everyone because the palate, tongue base and weight often play a role. At Gangnam Yonsei ENT Clinic, the airway is evaluated first, and nasal procedures are done under local anesthesia with short, same-day recoveries.

Will Nasal Surgery Stop My Snoring? – ENT care at Gangnam Yonsei ENT Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul

It depends where the snoring comes from

Snoring is the sound of vibrating tissue in a narrowed upper airway during sleep. The narrowing can be in the nose, the soft palate, the tonsils or the tongue base, and often in more than one place. Obstructive sleep apnea is a more serious condition in which the airway repeatedly collapses, causing breathing pauses and poor sleep quality.

Nasal surgery helps most when nasal obstruction is a significant contributor. It can reduce mouth breathing, lessen snoring and make CPAP more comfortable, but it rarely cures moderate or severe sleep apnea on its own.

How the airway is evaluated

  • Nasal endoscopy to check the septum, turbinates and nasal valve
  • Throat examination, including the tonsils, palate and tongue base
  • Cephalogram to assess the airway and jaw structure
  • CT scan when sinus or nasal anatomy needs detail
  • Sleep study (polysomnography) to measure whether apnea is present and how severe it is

Treatment options

  • Lifestyle: weight management, side sleeping, limiting alcohol before bed.
  • Nasal surgery: septoplasty or turbinate reduction when the nose is blocked.
  • Throat or tongue procedures: such as snoring surgery or radiofrequency tongue base reduction, for selected patients.
  • Devices: CPAP or an oral appliance, especially for moderate to severe apnea.

Recovery after nasal procedures for snoring

  • Turbinate reduction: 15–20 minutes under local anesthesia, no packing; avoid strain for a week, crusting about two weeks.
  • Septoplasty: 20–30 minutes under local anesthesia, packing for one day, nose protection for two weeks.

Snoring may temporarily worsen while the nose is swollen and crusted. Improvement is judged once healing has settled.

What we do at Gangnam Yonsei ENT

Dr. Kim Yoo Suk, a board-certified otolaryngologist and former faculty member at Yonsei and Ajou Universities, has published research on long-term outcomes of sleep apnea surgery and on heart rate variability in sleep apnea. He uses that background to match treatment to where the obstruction actually is, rather than offering one operation for everyone.

Consultations are in English. If a sleep study shows significant apnea, he discusses CPAP and oral appliance options alongside any surgery, as described on our CPAP and oral appliance page.

Habits that support any treatment

Whatever treatment you choose, everyday habits matter. Alcohol in the evening relaxes throat muscles and worsens snoring. Sleeping on your back allows the tongue to fall backward; side sleeping often helps. Controlling nasal allergies keeps the nose open at night, and even modest weight loss can reduce airway narrowing. These measures do not replace medical care for sleep apnea, but they improve the results of surgery and devices.

See a doctor promptly if

You or your partner notice breathing pauses, gasping or choking at night, or you feel very sleepy during the day, especially while driving. Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure and heart problems. Clinic hours are on the location and hours page.

Related questions

Do I need a sleep study before snoring surgery?

A sleep study is strongly recommended when sleep apnea is suspected, because it shows whether apnea is present and how severe it is. That determines whether surgery, CPAP, an oral appliance or a combination is the most appropriate approach.

Will my partner notice a difference right away?

Usually not immediately. Swelling and crusting after nasal surgery can make snoring temporarily worse. Any improvement is best judged a few weeks later, once the nose has healed and breathing through it is easier.

Can nasal surgery help me use CPAP?

Yes, in many cases. A blocked nose makes CPAP uncomfortable and can lead people to stop using it. Improving nasal airflow with septoplasty or turbinate reduction may make CPAP easier to tolerate when it is needed.
